Top Tomato

This is a spec grocery print ad design created for a new client. and I was one of three designers tasked with creating a design for the client to choose between.

The biggest challenge was to build a grocery ad from scratch that would be appealing to our client while also different from what the other designers were creating. They also have a unique positioning printing horizontally in the publication so coming up with a design that would stand out from the page was also an important obstacle to overcome.


I used a mix of images and item lists for the grocery products, utilized lifestyle and product images for visual interest, and also chose background textures as visual separations of categories. It was important to work with their company red color as well as sample other colors from their logo to keep a consistent brand identity. 
 

I am really enjoying the side bar that I made for the featured "Top Deal" items on the first page. I think it's a classy way to highlight the sales of the week. I also tried to be a little playful with the design and copy for the different section headings. I feel that humor and whimsy fits really well in this grocery brand. 

In the end, my design was the one that the client decided to go with. Not only did that make me personally feel validated as a designer, but it was also a big win for the enterprise to sell this ad space for a large ad space in our publication.
